the black pencil skirt
So about a year ago (yes, I waited a year to wear it), I saw this lady going to restaurant with her daughter. It was a heat wave, and she was wearing a knee-length leather skirt and white tank. I thought the look was perfect, but not right for the weather. So I pulled out this skirt, and hung it up on the 'to wear' rack, where it hung for one year!
I always wanted a leather pencil skirt, but thought it was an impractical purchase for my location. So when Altuzarra did a collection with Target, the black pencil skirt caught my eye (found here as well, in size 14).
I paired it with my Robert Rodriguez asymmetrical top (similar); it's a long top running diagonally, and I tucked it halfway in. I love the multi-layered tops because they have so much movement (check out this Alice + Olivia top). Tucking them in provides a completely different look. This Derek Lam top would be perfect as well. I love the Eileen Fisher top for a more simple look, and it's versatile enough for any other outfit.
I never would recommend buying the capsule collections by these designers for one very simple reason: the pieces are made to give the best representation of the designer's usual style (this is the original Altuzarra pencil skirt).
Usually, these collaborations don't offer a lot of good staples. And since everyone is rushing the stores for these items, you're guaranteed to see a bunch of people wearing the same thing.
This skirt is the only thing I got from the collection. I've been needing a black pencil skirt for years, and I have waited and waited until I found just the right one. I love this one because it's snake print, but it is a cotton blend, therefore wearable year-round.
The Target collections (and H&M and others) are often prone to bad quality. This skirt is decent, it has some stretch, but the design snagged a bit. I also bought the Marsala colored dress and immediately returned it, the quality was quite bad.
I found this skirt to be just right with length and fit, only problem was the waist is a little loose, but it is not significant to need a belt, especially with the top tucked in. I am very happy with this purchase, I think it is the perfect black pencil skirt, and is exactly what I wanted.
I chose my lace heels once again, (similar here) for a more summer look. The lace overlay goes well with the print of the skirt even though it is not the same exact design. The lace pump is a great choice for summer, check out these gorgeous Kay Unger textured pumps in a much friendlier price. These Menbur pumps are in a great price range as well.
And that's the perfect black pencil skirt! Just remember to keep it simple. <3
