culottes for the faint of heart
In case I haven't mention this a hundred times already, I am not a big fan of trends. Whenever someone says, "you're so trendy!" I don't see it as a compliment; they're basically just saying you have eyes. I think it is always a mistake to blindly follow a trend. Culottes are one current trend that I am unlikely to follow. I just don't think they're flattering. However, I do have tons of things in my closet that can 'pass' for certain trends.
I'm afraid I just blue myself :D :D :D
All my Arrested Development fans better get that one! These pants are French Connection, and are probably five years old. They are the perfect blue color that Tobias Funke used to blue himself ;)
I just love that line.
I never really wore these pants because I wasn't crazy about the style, and I could not find anything to match. I absolutely love these Risto pants, however. They are wool, but I think it would be a great accent item in the fall, and on colder summer nights.
These Alice + Olivia pants are more the flouncy, billowing style. I originally bought my pants in an attempt to copy Alice + Olivia at a lower price, but these are on sale!
Both of those pants are viable options if you don't like culottes. Most of the time, culottes don't work because they hit your leg at an awkward spot, so long, wide-leg pants are a perfect solution.
After trying many different tops, I realized any of my loose tanks combined with wide leg pants just overwhelm me. So it must be the crop top.
My top is just a tank I took and cut the bottom. This top from Ronny Kobo is also a knit. I like the longer, loose style of crop tops because it matches the silhouette of wide leg pants. Something that is too tight on top would look disproportionate with pants that flare at the bottom.
If you have your mind set on culottes, the best option is to choose one that hits mid calf. This jumpsuit takes some of the guesswork out of finding a matching top. And these Dagmar culottes are crepe fabric, exactly like my French connection pants!
I paired this look with my fave Manolo Chaos. There is no shoe I would rather wear. Seriously. I have the lower heel version and they are so comfortable and versatile, I wear them almost everyday. The minimalist style looks like it is here to stay, so check out these shoes, and these from Nordstrom at a much lower price point.
For jewelry, I mixed metals. I chose gold bangles from Ralph Lauren (also check out these textured ones), worn on my upper arm, and some twig earrings. Obviously I love these from Ippolita, but these and these DVF ones are a better price ;)
My bag is the Rebecca Minkoff MAB tote (similar here). It is a perfect example of how two seemingly un-matching colors can go together. Turquoise is a great addition to the royal blue pants (or culottes), and the colors compliment each other.
Do you guys like my painting in the back? Don't answer that :P
I hope I've given you some options if you're hesitant to try culottes. Have a great week!
