balmain for H&M

Another month, another designer collaboration. This one seems to be all the rage right now: BalmainxHM or HMxBalmain, you get the point. Olivier Rousteing is making a capsule Balmain collection for H&M. I always suggest forgoing these types of collections because they're so impractical. Anything you buy from there will be out of style instantly, and worse yet, everyone will know you have something old from seasons ago.

These super recognizable designs will be trendy for a few minutes, tops.

But when I saw Jourdan Dunn's sleeveless jacket with belt, and Kendall's harem pants, my mind went straight to the suit in my closet.

I never really liked this jumpsuit. The fabric was a little thin for my taste, and it was too big for me. For the kind of open neck style, I thought it either needed something under it, or it should have been thicker.

I even came up with an outfit to replace it. But when the Balmain for H&M collection made it out, I realized I can perfectly recreate the look.

My jumpsuit is by something called Tbags (here it is in a print black and white). I never heard of this brand, but wanted a nice fancy jumpsuit I could wear on evenings out. I was way ahead of my time ;) so this Balmain suit wasn't available yet.

I'm really proud of this look I put together. I think the only thing that sets it apart from the collection is the name on the tag.

It's easy for me to put together similar looks to what I see on the catwalk because I have so much staples in my closet. And I do think a black jumpsuit is a good staple to have. Like this Theory jumpsuit, which is on sale now, and this Young Fabulous & Broke one. I Also like this one from Lovers + Friends, and if you really don't want to spend a ton of money, check out this one.

My bralette is actually a separate piece from yet another capsule collection, Amber Valletta for Monroe.  know, I know, I sound like a hypocrite when I say don't buy capsule collections. But I have made a lot of mistakes spending heaps of money on things I no longer wear.

This bralette was a lot more like a bra than a top (although I have worn it is a top), so I would recommend this one from ASOS if you want one that can work as both.

If you don't mind the lingerie look and want just a peek of gold from your jumpsuit, check out this one, and this one.

Finally, the gold buckled belt. Both the Balmain and Balmain for H&M looks have big gold buckles. For me, that's just too much, since I have a short upper body.

I like this smaller belt from Kate Spade, or this belt from Dsquared2 that's on sale now.

And for the shoes I went with simple minimalist sandals. The Manolo Chaos is a great option, and these from Nordstrom are a much more price-conscious choice; as are these from Chinese Laundry.

I recommend trying to put this Balmain for H&M look together with something you already have.

These capsule collections always generate a lot of hype, but in the end aren't really worth it. It's much more fun to force yourself to get creative with what's already in your closet, than get in shoving matches standing in line for HMxBalmain.
