Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

‘Homegoing’ by Yaa Gyasi is the PEN/Hemingway prize winner of 2017, so my goal is to finish it by the end of the year. Even without finishing it, I can tell this book is deserving of the prize a hundred times over. Homegoing is set in the late 1700s in Africa, at the beginning of the slave trade. The book goes on to tell the story of two lines of a family. Two half sisters, one of whom was born to a slave woman, and the other, born to the same woman once she was free. Each chapter focuses on a new generation from the various family lines across centuries, leading to the presence.

homegoing yaa gyasi black lives matter race relations books reading africa

Homegoing is vital to read in our present time. This book captures the horrors black people have endured through centuries of hate and discrimination. But it remains a beautiful story of how our lives unfold and what leads to who we are today. In the end, it is about finding your roots and your place in the world.

There were so many parts in the book I loved, but what surprised me the most is how I related to the characters. One of the characters from Africa feel like she does not belong in America; like she is ‘the wrong kind of black.’ This is how I feel being a white immigrant in the US. By default, I am excused from a lot of discrimination and injustice. But I am not welcomed to the privilege of a lot of middle class white people are born with.

I think it’s time we put away the things that divide us. Multiculturalism is what makes this country truly unique — it’s time we embrace that.

There’s still a few weeks left in 2017, don’t sleep on this book!

Holiday Outfits

Holiday Outfits

Now that December is here, I’m all about planning those holiday outfits. Now mind you, I hardly ever go to holiday parties, but I love planning for them… You can clearly see my logic is not flawed.

Let me just tell you what I went through to get this outfit. It’s second-hand, and it was listed as a top and skirt on the site, which it is! But because they were separate they were each unavailable at different times. So first the top sold out, then the skirt, then the top became available again only to disappear quickly. finally, I found a size medium on eBay, and to my luck the skirt became available. I was finally able to buy them both! Just goes to show, when you really want something, it HAS TO work out.

Although they are a set, I love that they can be worn separately. The top with some black pants or skirt would make great holiday outfits. And believe me you want to grab this bustier top while it’s still available, here and on Tradesy.

The tweed fabric is perfect for holiday outfits as well. I was worried it would look too grandma-ish but I think it’s actually more interesting that way. The skirt can also be worn with some furry sweater; either way it would work for Christmas or New Year’s Eve!

This outfit just wasn’t complete without a coat. I love this long black coat with my holiday outfits. It’s ‘warm’ but it doesn’t look like I’m all bundled up, which is something I hate about winter clothes. It’s also a great coat if you love minimalist styling.

I went with the minimal approach for the shoes as well. I didn’t want anything to take away from the gold set so just some simple black pumps were enough. They are a staple for every wardrobe.

I hope you guys like this look, and stay tuned for more holiday outfits!

Winter Stuff I Can’t Wait To Wear

Winter Stuff I Can’t Wait To Wear

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear

What’s the best thing about winter? Black clothes! Just kidding, but seriously, every time winter rolls around I fall back on my usual patterns of wearing all black. But not today Satan, not today. I wanted to make this post of all the winter stuff I am looking forward to this season. And maybe I’ll actually remember to wear some of it.

In an attempt to add colour this season, my go to bag will be this green jeweled cross-body, from Zara. Hopefully it will remind me to wear my green cargo pants as well.

Minimalism

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 4

What I’m really excited to do this season (ok, every season) is minimalism. My winter coat, on the right is a plain long black coat, so it makes for perfect minimalism outfits. Paired with a midi tube dress, it will be the perfect chic look I love so much. Every winter I feel so bundled up, and like all the extra layers and scarves just make me look so frumpy. Minimalism is a great way to class up any ordinary outfit and still look casual.

Furry-ness

My friend just gave me this super chic vintage faux fur coat. I know, I couldn’t believe it either. But I’m officially in love with it, it is so warm and is the perfect coat for going out. Most of my faux fur stuff just isn’t warm enough to throw over a dress, so I’m really glad to have this one amongst my winter stuff.

Different textures

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 3

So let’s review, what do I love most of all? Furry stuff with fur. I love this look for a texture play outfit. The fur collar and the sweater look great together, and the suede pants add yet another different fabric to this look. It’s so unlike me, but all the different colours and fabrics really work well together.

Another honorary winter favourite is tying coats at the waist! Seen in this outfit with a leather belt, yet another different texture to mix things up.

All sorts of boots

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 6          winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear sock boots

Winter stuff just isn’t complete without some great boots. I love the pointed toe Saint Laurent, but I also have a weak spot for the suede Manolos. This season the sock boot is really in, and I don’t think I can justify buying it. Wearing the suede pants with the suede boots kind of does the trick though, don’t you think

What are some winter stuff you can’t wait to wear?

Over The Knee Boots Lookbook

Over The Knee Boots Lookbook

OTK boots are everywhere at the moment, so I couldn’t resist putting together this over the knee boots lookbook. I forewent the obvious ones, like sweater dresses and leather leggings. Those outfits are all great but I feel like we’ve seen them a thousand times. So hopefully you’ll find these five outfits more unique and interesting!

First, you are going to need some boots! Here are some great ones in all different price ranges.

with a blazer dress

Another trend I’m obsessed with this season is the blazer dress. It has been everywhere, and I loved the way it was paired with over the knee boots at Balmain, so I thought I’d try it too!

You too can pull off this look! How? Lots and lots of tape. And safety pins. Since this is just a blazer I had to pin it closed and tape to my body.

Another trend I’ve seen, especially in the spring fashion shows, is the head wrap, so I thought why not throw one of those on there!

with your holiday dress

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 4

I love this green dress for Christmas! The colour and the flared sleeves just remind me so much of something elfin, and it is perfect for the holidays.

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 2          over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 9

I also love how sheer tights look with over the knee boots. When they’re the same colour as the boots the whole outfit looks so well put-together and chic. Not to mention, your legs look longer!

with a skirt suit

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 3

Ok, this isn’t really a skirt suit. It’s not even the same brand! But the gold buttons on the jacket and skirt match perfectly so I love wearing it together.

This whole outfit looks very ‘Jackie O’ in my opinion, so I love throwing in that over the knee boot to throw everyone off their game. If you’re nervous about wearing OTK boots because you think they’ll look whore-ish, this is the best way for you to try them out!

with jeans and a bodysuit

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 12

I’ll admit, over the knee boots over jeans is not my favourite look. First of all, it’s very hard to put on. Second of all, I think it just looks too bulky. That’s why I went with a bodysuit for this outfit, the contrast of the low back with the boots and jeans makes it look a little less bundled up.

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 6          over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 7

No over the knee boots lookbook is complete without a jeans example. I think darker jeans are better; I don’t really like those outfits with black boots and light jeans. The furry vest is also super cute with a sleeveless top like a bodysuit. I love this look for night out.

with leggings and a tuxedo shirt

over the knee boots blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 5          over the knee boots blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 10

This outfit I can save for the coldest winter days in LA. I couldn’t do an over the knee boots lookbook without leggings. Although I have to say, it was hard to put these on too. What I love most about OTK boots is that they can be worn with skirts and dresses, making them the perfect shoe for colder weather when you still want to wear a skirt. But this outfit is nice too. Whenever I wear leggings, I like to wear silk on top, to make them look nicer. The all black on the bottom also makes my legs look super long, so I’m not complaining!

I hope you all like the outfits I put together, and I will be back soon with holiday inspo!

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso

Most people generally consider Picasso to be one of the greatest artists of all time. He’s certainly revered and admired by many. He is the father of Cubism. His style was risky and unexpected. But did you also know that he treated women like shit?

pablo picasso marie therese walter la reve

One of the most famous subjects of his paintings was Marie Therese, seen above in La Reve, or the dream. She was his mistress for a while (because divorce was illegal and he couldn’t leave his wife). He eventually married her and stayed married to her until his death. He had several children with her. And used her ability to have children to torture Dora Maar, one of his mistresses who could not have children.

dora maar pablo picasso painting art cubism women

Picasso was able to capture her heartbreak in beautiful paintings. But he allegedly pitted them against each other and one time even suggested they physically fight over him.

I am not writing this to suggest that everyone should now commence hating Picasso. I just want to share some part of his life that not many people know about. As an artist he had a duty to create art that we will love and admire forever. But didn’t he also owe to himself to maintain some morality?

My question is where should he have drawn the line? And also, do you guys think he would have been able to produce the art he has created if he behaved differently? I sincerely hope the answer is ‘yes.’

Here’s a horrible video I took in his room at the LACMA. There is no photography allowed, so I had to be stealthy ;))

White Skirt Two Ways

White Skirt Two Ways

Welcome to November in LA, where its a hundred degrees during the day, and minus fifty at night! I realize this is not the right time to be wearing all white, but I just got this white skirt and had to show it off!

I love this skirt because of the zipper in the back, and the fact that I can now wear it two ways!

Although it’s definitely more of a summer look, the white skirt is a classic. I love one with a back zip because you can adjust the length of the slit. And, as you know, I love having clothes that can be worn multiple ways. With a zipper like this the skirt can be worn backwards, or with the zipper along the side. It just makes this outfit that much more versatile.

This top is actually pretty cool. It has ribbing all over it, so it looks textured and nicer than it is. Because the white skirt is such a nice piece, I don’t feel bad pairing it with something cheap from Missguided ;))

Those Dior sandals tho! I am in love with those shoes. For this white skirt and more summer-y look, I love a simple black sandal.

I love wearing the bracelet and Dolce Gabbana bag together. The bag has pink lining and trim and it just looks so perfectly matched with the rose quartz bracelet. I’m all about those little details.

I hope you are all enjoying your fall! I want to be able to post more of my fall outfits, but I’ve been incredibly busy. But DON’T WORRY! I have my fall look book locked and loaded ;D

Grupo Escombros — Signs

I had the pleasure of catching the Photography in Argentina exhibit at the Getty this weekend. It was a collection of photographs from 1850 until 2010. I’m not too familiar with photography in Argentina, so it was a great experience. It was a very politically charged exhibit. Argentia has had it’s fair share of troubled history, so this came as no surprise.

The first photo is from a collection called Sons and Daughters, by Julio Pantoja. He photographed the children of people who have mysteriously vanished under Isabel Peron’s reign. The second photo, Pancartas, or Signs, is by El Grupo Escombros, a group of Argentinian painters, photographers, and performance artists set on shining a light on current political and economical defects.

But perhaps my favourite section was the modern photography that showed the paradox of wealth exclusion. The section begins with Sebastian Friedman’s Segurismos, showing people behind gates and fences, voluntarily, physically showing us the division of social and economic status. The back wall contains Ananke Asseff’s photographs. It is a series of people holding guns, shining light on the unreasonable fear the upper and middle class have of the urban population, people living in the villas miserias — slums. This series is called Potencial – potential. It made me realize how this is not even a legitimate fear, just the potential for danger.
Right next to this collection is a set of Gian Paolo Minnelli’s photographs from the barrio. They show life from the ‘other side.’ The people the rich are so afraid of.

It was a perfect set-up. The exhibit highlighted the superficial division we place upon ourselves. Causing more of such divisions to come up again and again.

If you have a chance to see this, I highly recommend it!

Fall and Colour — Lookbook Part 4

Fall and Colour — Lookbook Part 4

In the fall it’s super easy for me to fall back on my all grey/black patterns. But there is a way to make fall and colour work together. The yellow dress, in that mustard hue is perfect for fall, and the pink lining popping out of the coat is a nice touch without being over bearing.

fall and colour mustard yellow missguided trench coat juicy couture manolo blahnik suede boots 3

The dress I’m wearing is also great without the coat. It’s got that off-shoulder look that was popular for spring, but I still would like to wear it this season. The fall and colour go together perfectly in this case.

Get The Look

I had to knot the dress at the knee so that it wouldn’t be too long. I could just take it in, but since it was a high street dress, I don’t know if its worth it. Anyway, I like the uneven hem look even better.

I’m glad to finally be able to wear my Manolo Blahnik suede boots. They just go with everything and are super comfortable. It might seem kind of pointless to have a pair of boots that are suede AND open toe, but as long as we’re just shooting blog posts about fall and colour, they work perfectly! :))

fall and colour mustard yellow missguided trench coat juicy couture manolo blahnik suede boots 5

I wanted to try the belt over coat look I saw around, and I kind of like it! It keeps everything in place better. I might not wear it all together like this, but just wanted to show off all the trends I’ve been wanting to try, at once.

fall and colour mustard yellow missguided trench coat juicy couture manolo blahnik suede boots 4

Finally, this coat is another great piece for fall. I made the sleeve slit to make it more interesting, and I kind of like the pink lining popping out. This look is probably a bit too much all together for my daily wear, but I’m so proud of myself for combining fall and colour, that I just had to share it!

Over The Knee Boots — Fall Lookbook part 3

I am so glad over the knee boots are still a thing! Honestly, these boots were never my favourite and it took awhile to warm up to them, but now that I have, I never want them to go out of style.

The ‘little house on the prairie’ dress is also a nice way to offset the boots. It’s just an unexpected mixture. The buster style top is something I lifted from Dior this season. They have a lot of these dresses going around, from multiple designers.

As I said in my previous post, sheer stuff was everywhere in the spring. I chose this dress because I thought it would be a good way to tie sheer clothes into the fall. The light grey looks a bit better for fall. And I’ve seen the bustier style on dresses from Dior, so I must be doing something right!

I love wearing over the knee boots with dresses because they make my legs look so much longer! The dress is a very girly style, so the boots don’t look too whore-ish.

Finally, I added the belt because I’m fully copying Dior with this over the knee boots look. I think it makes the black boots make a little more sense.

I hope you guys liked the third part of my Fall Lookbook, and let me know what you think of over the knee boots!

Sheer Stuff For Fall — Lookbook Part 2

Sheer Stuff For Fall — Lookbook Part 2

Sheer and see-through clothes were everywhere this spring and summer, and I wanted to find a way to bring it into the fall. The best way I could think to do this was with a chunky, very loose, open knit. It’s not exactly see-through, but when it comes to ‘sheer stuff for fall,’ this is the best way to do it.

What I love most about fall is getting to wear boots. These Manolo Blahnik boots are my absolute favourite. I initially was going to buy some pointed toe St. Laurent boots, but you can’t just buy one pair! So I got the Manolos as well. They turned out to be my go to staple for fall. And luckily, the fitted, almost sock-like style is everywhere right now!

sheer stuff for fall lookbook part 2 alexander wang manolo blahnik missguided black mini chunky knit sweater zara bag 3

The piece de resistance of sheer stuff for fall is, obviously, something sheer. This Alexander Wang sweater is a super loose knit, but I think it counts. Kind of like a grandma sweater, I love this one for putting a unique spin on an old classic. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do much to keep me warm!

sheer stuff for fall lookbook part 2 alexander wang manolo blahnik missguided black mini chunky knit sweater zara bag 2

As is the case with a lot of loose knits, they can stretch out as they are being worn. This sweater is nice, but it gets very heavy and can look overwhelming. So I decided to wear it with a plain black mini to eliminate that very bulky look. I love this sweater with some leather leggings too. And will probably wear it with a belt once in a while as well.

sheer stuff for fall lookbook part 2 alexander wang manolo blahnik missguided black mini chunky knit sweater zara bag 4

I’m always worried I wear too much black in the fall, so to change it up, I went with this pink bag from Zara. I love a good structured bag, and this one has red lining so it really pops!

I hope you guys are thinking about wearing some sheer stuff for fall! Let me know what you want to wear in the comments!
