How To Do Casual Outfits Right

Spice Up Casual Outfits

Casual outfits are great, but if you’re like me, you’re wearing black pants and white tops every day. It gets super boring. I always try to spice up casual outfits by doing something different. In this case, I added a corset belt given to me by my wonderful friend. It adds just a bit of an edge to my usual, boring every-day outfit. casual outfits manolo blahnik patent leather heels shoes suede pants piano white tank fur stole jacket corset belt 3

casual outfits manolo blahnik patent leather heels shoes suede pants piano white tank fur stole jacket corset belt 5 The best way to make this outfit work is to have a nice compilation of basics. In my case, that’s ten white tank tops and ten black pairs of pants. But that’s not necessary… one or two plain items with simple styles are a great way to get started. I like this outfit with a plain white tank, and I think a silk one would be even better than what I went with.

casual outfits manolo blahnik patent leather heels shoes suede pants piano white tank fur stole jacket corset belt 6 Suede pants are not something one would consider in casual outfits, but they are a great way to add versatility if you wear black pants all the time. These faux leggings are not too expensive and look great.

casual outfits manolo blahnik patent leather heels shoes suede pants piano white tank fur stole jacket corset belt 7           casual outfits manolo blahnik patent leather heels shoes suede pants piano white tank fur stole jacket corset belt 2 I went with a lot of furry items for this look because it is ‘winter.’ And yes, this is my winter coat. It is a lined cardigan from Free People :DDD We don’t need a super warm jacket in these parts, but I love the furry collar, as it adds some uniqueness to all casual outfits.

casual outfits manolo blahnik patent leather heels shoes suede pants piano white tank fur stole jacket corset belt 4 The piece de resistance is the corset belt, of course. It’s a great addition to any belt collection because it can double as a waist shaper, and it makes every outfit look fitted. The fit is key in determining whether something looks good.

casual outfits manolo blahnik patent leather heels shoes suede pants piano white tank fur stole jacket corset belt I love these Manolo Blahnik pumps, but it is yet another basic item. With all the other accessories going on in this outfit, it’s best to keep the shoes simple!

Having Too Many Sweater Dresses

Having Too Many Sweater Dresses

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and a Happy New Year! Although I had so much fun planning holiday outfits, I realized I forgot my favourite — sweater dresses! I just bought a navy blue one by Phillip Lim because I was whining to my friend about not having any. But then I remembered I already had this red one. Story of my life. But one can never have too many sweater dresses, especially when they can be worn backwards.

Yes, I am wearing this dress backwards. Also, I am not a thousand percent sure it is a dress. I’ve worn it before with pants, and with a bralette as a deep V, but I think this version is my favourite.

The kimono sleeves look really cool, and it’s unique in that not many sweater dresses have sleeves like that. Worn backwards, it kind of looks like a cape dress, which I also love.

I haven’t worn my Chanel bag in a while. This vintage bag is one of my most coveted pieces. I haven’t seen any other like it, so I always feel so special when I carry it. A vintage Chanel bag is a worthy goal. There are few items out there that still remain true symbols of class. In consumerist societies such as mine, anyone with a credit card can purchase anything. However, Chanel remains an unparalleled symbol of taste and sophistication. So if you’re wearing super short sweater dresses, this is the go-to bag, obvi :PP

Another vintage piece in this ensemble is the belt. It is reversible, with black on the other side. It’s also super long, so it can be worn with anything. It was complete chance that it matched the red dress so perfectly!

And of course I got some totally weather-appropriate shoes for you! I mean, not only are these sandals, they’re also suede. An absolute perfect choice for early January ;)

Living in LA has completely debilitated me from being able to choose shoes for cold weather… or clothes for that matter! I have over a hundred pairs of shoes and zero clue what to wear when it’s freezing cold.

I hope you all have a great first full week of January, and see you guys soon!

Teal The Season

Teal The Season

Teal the season.. see what I did there??

In an effort to wear more colours, I decided that the colour of the season is teal. If you’re still debating what to wear for New Years Eve, this cheap little dress has a great winter look. Of course if the ‘winter look’ you’re going for is a major chest cold. But it’s NYE, so it’s passable.

Teal is a great colour because it goes with any skin tone. Even my pasty self looks okay. It has both green and blue hues so it works for warm and cool skin tones. I don’t know why, but this colour has a holiday vibe.

I’m using the blazer to show where a warmer coat might go, but we actually don’t need them this year. I like the long sleeves on this dress, it just looks kind of wintry, even though it’s anything but. Also, wearing a blazer here kind of looks like a blazer dress, which I always love.

Since the dress is the main attraction here, I just went with some simple black pumps. I also like black boots for this look if the weather is too cold. But the plain black heels are a perfect addition to your wardrobe if you don’t already have a pair.

teal dress missguided low cut long sleeve new years eve dress nye holidays 3

Since teal has both cool and warm tones in it, both gold and silver jewelry would work well, and I have worn both with this dress. I really like simple gold chains, and the low neckline is perfect for a body chain.

I hope you’re all having a great holiday and Happy New Year!

Christmas White

Christmas White

I love a good Christmas white look, so I’m super happy to have this outfit for the holidays. The long white skirt is amazing, and I love how it’s technically a swim coverup, but can work in the winter. I’ve been seeing the cropped sweater/long skirt look around, and its a favourite for a holiday party.

This skirt is yet another one of those pieces that can work for multiple occasions. It’s a summer swim cover up, but it works just as well for a Christmas white look. The long flared length is great for winter. Usually long skirts and dresses look bad on me, like I’m wearing a bag. But the slits here make it look less bulky. Plus, it’s fun to watch it billow around you in the wind!

christmas white long skirt crop sweater cashmere tan holidays party 6

The cropped sweater is perfect for winter, and works great in this Christmas white look. I did have to roll it up a little bit, because I love an asymmetrical hem, but it’s still very short. It’s cashmere so it’s very warm and the long sleeves and loose silhouette have a very cozy ‘curl up by the fireplace’ vibe.

christmas white long skirt crop sweater cashmere tan holidays party 5

To go with the all white I went with some tan shoes. I really need some high heels not to trip over the long skirt!
The Giambattista Valli pumps on this list are my exact shoes, but I could only find them in black.

To finish off the Christmas white look I wore some gold rings. I love how long the sleeves are, and the simple rings just round off the look nicely.

I really like the slits on this skirt!

Hope you’re all having a great winter, and happy holidays!

Furry Jackets

Furry Jackets

The winter season is upon us (more or less), so it’s time for my obligatory furry jackets post. You can’t go wrong with one of these in the winter. The faux fur does a great job keeping you warm and you don’t have to wear it with a crop top like I did. That was just because it’s still 100 degrees here during the day.

furry jackets leather leggings crop top choker black fur slides urban outfitters H&M 2

I also love wearing my leather leggings in the winter. The shiny look might be too much with furry jackets, but these Missoni pants are more matte, and look just like real leather! Did I mention this whole outfit is cruelty free?

This jacket from H&M is actually really warm. I love the way the faux Mongolian goat looks, too. It can also be worn for any occasion, which makes me love it even more.

The faux leather leggings are another great wardrobe must-have. Because they’re not real leather, I can wear them year-round. And I have worn them one day in the summer, and did NOT have to pull a Ross on Friends. They are definitely better quality than the ordinary shiny leggings too, so I’m super excited to have them.

No furry jackets look is complete without furry shoes! I really went for it this year. I love these furry slippers, they’re super comfortable and I can go days without taking them off!

furry jackets leather leggings crop top choker black fur slides urban outfitters H&M 8          furry jackets leather leggings crop top choker black fur slides urban outfitters H&M 5

The top is really nothing special, it’s just a tube top I cut to make it shorter. With leather pants and furry jackets I really don’t like to wear anything too bulky, so the crop top is perfect. Probably might be too cold for it now, but I’ll be wearing it while I still can get away with it!

furry jackets leather leggings crop top choker black fur slides urban outfitters H&M 3

To finish off this look I just tied a satin lace around my neck to work as a choker! I think I found this one in one of shoe boxes, but come on, who can justify spending money on a string??

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

‘Homegoing’ by Yaa Gyasi is the PEN/Hemingway prize winner of 2017, so my goal is to finish it by the end of the year. Even without finishing it, I can tell this book is deserving of the prize a hundred times over. Homegoing is set in the late 1700s in Africa, at the beginning of the slave trade. The book goes on to tell the story of two lines of a family. Two half sisters, one of whom was born to a slave woman, and the other, born to the same woman once she was free. Each chapter focuses on a new generation from the various family lines across centuries, leading to the presence.

homegoing yaa gyasi black lives matter race relations books reading africa

Homegoing is vital to read in our present time. This book captures the horrors black people have endured through centuries of hate and discrimination. But it remains a beautiful story of how our lives unfold and what leads to who we are today. In the end, it is about finding your roots and your place in the world.

There were so many parts in the book I loved, but what surprised me the most is how I related to the characters. One of the characters from Africa feel like she does not belong in America; like she is ‘the wrong kind of black.’ This is how I feel being a white immigrant in the US. By default, I am excused from a lot of discrimination and injustice. But I am not welcomed to the privilege of a lot of middle class white people are born with.

I think it’s time we put away the things that divide us. Multiculturalism is what makes this country truly unique — it’s time we embrace that.

There’s still a few weeks left in 2017, don’t sleep on this book!

Holiday Outfits

Holiday Outfits

Now that December is here, I’m all about planning those holiday outfits. Now mind you, I hardly ever go to holiday parties, but I love planning for them… You can clearly see my logic is not flawed.

holiday outfits alexis gold boucle bralette bustier skirt gold christmas new years eve 2

Let me just tell you what I went through to get this outfit. It’s second-hand, and it was listed as a top and skirt on the site, which it is! But because they were separate they were each unavailable at different times. So first the top sold out, then the skirt, then the top became available again only to disappear quickly. finally, I found a size medium on eBay, and to my luck the skirt became available. I was finally able to buy them both! Just goes to show, when you really want something, it HAS TO work out.

Although they are a set, I love that they can be worn separately. The top with some black pants or skirt would make great holiday outfits. And believe me you want to grab this bustier top while it’s still available, here and on Tradesy.

The tweed fabric is perfect for holiday outfits as well. I was worried it would look too grandma-ish but I think it’s actually more interesting that way. The skirt can also be worn with some furry sweater; either way it would work for Christmas or New Year’s Eve!

holiday outfits alexis gold boucle bralette bustier skirt gold christmas new years eve 5

This outfit just wasn’t complete without a coat. I love this long black coat with my holiday outfits. It’s ‘warm’ but it doesn’t look like I’m all bundled up, which is something I hate about winter clothes. It’s also a great coat if you love minimalist styling.

holiday outfits alexis gold boucle bralette bustier skirt gold christmas new years eve 7          holiday outfits alexis gold boucle bralette bustier skirt gold christmas new years eve 3

I went with the minimal approach for the shoes as well. I didn’t want anything to take away from the gold set so just some simple black pumps were enough. They are a staple for every wardrobe.

I hope you guys like this look, and stay tuned for more holiday outfits!

Winter Stuff I Can’t Wait To Wear

Winter Stuff I Can’t Wait To Wear

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear

What’s the best thing about winter? Black clothes! Just kidding, but seriously, every time winter rolls around I fall back on my usual patterns of wearing all black. But not today Satan, not today. I wanted to make this post of all the winter stuff I am looking forward to this season. And maybe I’ll actually remember to wear some of it.

In an attempt to add colour this season, my go to bag will be this green jeweled cross-body, from Zara. Hopefully it will remind me to wear my green cargo pants as well.

Minimalism

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 4

What I’m really excited to do this season (ok, every season) is minimalism. My winter coat, on the right is a plain long black coat, so it makes for perfect minimalism outfits. Paired with a midi tube dress, it will be the perfect chic look I love so much. Every winter I feel so bundled up, and like all the extra layers and scarves just make me look so frumpy. Minimalism is a great way to class up any ordinary outfit and still look casual.

Furry-ness

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 5          winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 7

My friend just gave me this super chic vintage faux fur coat. I know, I couldn’t believe it either. But I’m officially in love with it, it is so warm and is the perfect coat for going out. Most of my faux fur stuff just isn’t warm enough to throw over a dress, so I’m really glad to have this one amongst my winter stuff.

Different textures

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 3

So let’s review, what do I love most of all? Furry stuff with fur. I love this look for a texture play outfit. The fur collar and the sweater look great together, and the suede pants add yet another different fabric to this look. It’s so unlike me, but all the different colours and fabrics really work well together.

Another honorary winter favourite is tying coats at the waist! Seen in this outfit with a leather belt, yet another different texture to mix things up.

All sorts of boots

winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear 6          winter stuff clothes fur faux collar bag boots st laurent what to wear sock boots

Winter stuff just isn’t complete without some great boots. I love the pointed toe Saint Laurent, but I also have a weak spot for the suede Manolos. This season the sock boot is really in, and I don’t think I can justify buying it. Wearing the suede pants with the suede boots kind of does the trick though, don’t you think

What are some winter stuff you can’t wait to wear?

Over The Knee Boots Lookbook

Over The Knee Boots Lookbook

OTK boots are everywhere at the moment, so I couldn’t resist putting together this over the knee boots lookbook. I forewent the obvious ones, like sweater dresses and leather leggings. Those outfits are all great but I feel like we’ve seen them a thousand times. So hopefully you’ll find these five outfits more unique and interesting!

First, you are going to need some boots! Here are some great ones in all different price ranges.

with a blazer dress

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes

Another trend I’m obsessed with this season is the blazer dress. It has been everywhere, and I loved the way it was paired with over the knee boots at Balmain, so I thought I’d try it too!

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 11          over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 14

You too can pull off this look! How? Lots and lots of tape. And safety pins. Since this is just a blazer I had to pin it closed and tape to my body.

Another trend I’ve seen, especially in the spring fashion shows, is the head wrap, so I thought why not throw one of those on there!

with your holiday dress

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 4

I love this green dress for Christmas! The colour and the flared sleeves just remind me so much of something elfin, and it is perfect for the holidays.

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 2          over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 9

I also love how sheer tights look with over the knee boots. When they’re the same colour as the boots the whole outfit looks so well put-together and chic. Not to mention, your legs look longer!

with a skirt suit

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 3

Ok, this isn’t really a skirt suit. It’s not even the same brand! But the gold buttons on the jacket and skirt match perfectly so I love wearing it together.

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 13          over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 8

This whole outfit looks very ‘Jackie O’ in my opinion, so I love throwing in that over the knee boot to throw everyone off their game. If you’re nervous about wearing OTK boots because you think they’ll look whore-ish, this is the best way for you to try them out!

with jeans and a bodysuit

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 12

I’ll admit, over the knee boots over jeans is not my favourite look. First of all, it’s very hard to put on. Second of all, I think it just looks too bulky. That’s why I went with a bodysuit for this outfit, the contrast of the low back with the boots and jeans makes it look a little less bundled up.

over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 6          over the knee boots lookbook blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 7

No over the knee boots lookbook is complete without a jeans example. I think darker jeans are better; I don’t really like those outfits with black boots and light jeans. The furry vest is also super cute with a sleeveless top like a bodysuit. I love this look for night out.

with leggings and a tuxedo shirt

over the knee boots blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 5          over the knee boots blazer dress chain belt dress tights suit jeans bodysuit jacket fur vest black clothes ootd balmain suede shoes 10

This outfit I can save for the coldest winter days in LA. I couldn’t do an over the knee boots lookbook without leggings. Although I have to say, it was hard to put these on too. What I love most about OTK boots is that they can be worn with skirts and dresses, making them the perfect shoe for colder weather when you still want to wear a skirt. But this outfit is nice too. Whenever I wear leggings, I like to wear silk on top, to make them look nicer. The all black on the bottom also makes my legs look super long, so I’m not complaining!

I hope you all like the outfits I put together, and I will be back soon with holiday inspo!

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso

Most people generally consider Picasso to be one of the greatest artists of all time. He’s certainly revered and admired by many. He is the father of Cubism. His style was risky and unexpected. But did you also know that he treated women like shit?

pablo picasso marie therese walter la reve

One of the most famous subjects of his paintings was Marie Therese, seen above in La Reve, or the dream. She was his mistress for a while (because divorce was illegal and he couldn’t leave his wife). He eventually married her and stayed married to her until his death. He had several children with her. And used her ability to have children to torture Dora Maar, one of his mistresses who could not have children.

dora maar pablo picasso painting art cubism women

Picasso was able to capture her heartbreak in beautiful paintings. But he allegedly pitted them against each other and one time even suggested they physically fight over him.

I am not writing this to suggest that everyone should now commence hating Picasso. I just want to share some part of his life that not many people know about. As an artist he had a duty to create art that we will love and admire forever. But didn’t he also owe to himself to maintain some morality?

My question is where should he have drawn the line? And also, do you guys think he would have been able to produce the art he has created if he behaved differently? I sincerely hope the answer is ‘yes.’

Here’s a horrible video I took in his room at the LACMA. There is no photography allowed, so I had to be stealthy ;))
